Amazingly, we share more with the Mediterranean than the climate, and those that escape to Southern California for the weather might also be pleasantly surprised by our bountiful Mediterranean eateries.  Located about 10 minutes west of the Alamo Inn and Suites, Kareem’s Falafel is a cute hole-in-the-wall serving up the best falafels in town along with a healthy fusion of meat and veggie options, just what the doctor ordered.  This Mediterranean joint was a first in what is currently known as the Little Arabia District, with a family narrative that harkens back to Nazareth, Israel.  We found Kareem’s cozy and perfect for a no-frills happy lunch outing. 

Further up Brookhurst, also in Little Arabia, Forn Al Hara is likely to be missed by most passersby.  Located in an unassuming strip mall, this Lebanese Bakery offers a dizzying array of flatbreads.  Don’t be fooled by how basic the shop looks; the taste of these Arabic pizzas were incredible.  If you’re worried that you might feel out of place – even as we were – fear not, as the owner/cashier warmly guided us through the menu and helped us order what we needed that day.  The Maneesh minis were perfect for trying out a few flavors and we stuffed our faces with the Zatar & Cheese, Sujuk, and Lahem Bel Ajeen & Cheese.  The wait can be a bit long, so leave any fastfood expectations at the hotel.       

For a more upscale setting suitable for business-casual lunch, Aleppo’s Kitchen, right next to the Honda Center and Angel’s Stadium, is a 10-15 minute drive east of the Alamo Inn and Suites.  Aleppo’s goal is to serve authentic and wholesome food passed down from Syrian family tradition.  We went with the ribeye lavash wrap and one of the kabob plates, and everything was on point.  Our server recommended the Muhammara – a sweet and savory red pepper dip with origins from Aleppo, Syria – to pair with our meal and that really highlighted our culinary escape.  We would return to Aleppo’s for their Muhammara alone. 

As much as we dream of traveling the world, it’s not always easy considering what’s on our plate these days.  But take a bite at any one of these restaurants, and you’ll be transported worlds away in an instant. 

There are many places to land, and it’s always hard to agree on the ultimate destination.  San Francisco, arguably one of the most famous cities in the world, certainly gives rise to many thoughts and feelings.  From the global impact of the Silicon Valley to the fears of local crime blasted on the news, this city is truly diverse.  We’ve heard that the city is not very kid-friendly, but we have since learned that the Bay Area has cultivated many family-friendly communities.  Whether you want to get out with your college buddies or intentionally kindle curiosity and perspective in your children, we will drop a few thoughts to get you on the road. 

The Golden Gate Bridge.  Whether far away or close up, you need to see this incredible feat of ingenuity at some point.  If you’ve got tons of energy, look up how to bike across the bridge to Sausalito.  If you’re traveling with littles, surprise them with a visit to the Bay Area Discovery Museum, where they’ll play and explore with the Golden Gate in the background.  When you need something to satisfy the entire crew, try the Presidio Tunnel Tops, which is part of the Presidio, a National Historic Landmark with picnic areas, trails, multiple child-friendly play areas, beach access, all with gorgeous views of the iconic bridge.  Such are snapshots that last a lifetime.

Fisherman's Wharf.  You haven’t been to San Francisco until you’ve seen the sea lions and topped off on some sourdough bread bowls.  After that, indulge your sweet tooth at Ghiradelli Square or hop on a cable car to get a deeper feel for the city.  Those with children will want to stop by the Exploratorium, where the family will be engaged with exhibits and hands-on activities merging science, technology, and the arts.  Where else will you be able to observe live termites going to town on a piece of wood or be mesmerized (and grossed out) as a staff member performs a cow eye dissection to demonstrate how the eye functions?!

We’re a bit partial, but we always feel that Anaheim is a great place to start or end the adventure.  From the Alamo Inn and Suites, you can get up to San Francisco in 6-8 hours if you take the Interstate 5.  If you have some flexibility in your schedule and budget, we always recommend driving at least segments of Highway 101 or the Pacific Coast Highway – although either drive will take quite a bit longer than taking the 5 freeway, both alternatives will be much more scenic and bring you closer to the coastline.  In case you’ve got all the time in the world, it looks like the section of the PCH near Big Sur has recently reopened for travel for the first time in nearly 3 years.  This is one of those scenarios where the journey is as fantastic as the final stop, but don’t say we didn’t warn you: with all the sights and sounds that draw you in along the way, you might need to save San Francisco for next Spring Break. 

Although the 2026 Winter Olympics wrapped up a few days ago in Italy, we were excited to learn that some of these very athletes are heading our way sooner than we could imagine.  Along with Alysa Liu, other members from the mixed team event - Ilia Malinin, Madison Chock, Evan Bates, and Amber Glenn – are slated for the 2026 Stars on Ice tour, which makes a stop in Anaheim, CA on May 16.  Taking place at the Honda Center, a 10-minute drive east from the Alamo Inn and Suites, this opportunity to watch the U.S. National Figure Skating team perform in person is not one to pass up.  Those of us from California should be proud that several of these competitors grew up and trained in the Golden State.  And while we may or may not witness a quadruple axel, there should be enough Olympic spirit to fire up some newfound passion in our little ones and elevate our minds above the daily grind.

Some people love to run and some people loathe running.  Some people love running but stop because they feel that their bodies can’t handle it anymore.  Christopher McDougall apparently believes that human beings were made to run, even as they age, and he mesmerizes us with the tale of an isolated tribe of ultra-runners in “Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen.”  If you need a little inspiration, this book is a fun read, but be warned that it may lead you to sign up for races you’ve never been interested in!

Talking about races, we’re 2 days from the Disneyland® Half Marathon Weekend - happening right next to the Alamo Inn and Suites - when runners will descend upon Anaheim to participate in different events, which will include all the “medals and magic” that RunDisney® is known for.  The weekend will be extra special as these runs will be the last ones in the Anaheim Resort District for some time due to future construction in the area.  When we checked online recently, all the events were already sold out, as expected, but there are other noteworthy races in Orange County slated for 2026.

Right around the corner, the Surf City Marathon is set for 2/1/2026.  While many of the longer races are also sold out, we still see the individual 5K and Beach Mile events available for registration as of today.  These races run along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway near Huntington Beach, one of our favorites in Southern California.  If this one is too short notice, the Hoag OC Marathon Running Festival will be taking place the first week of May with various races placed around Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.  From what we can tell, most of the events for Hoag OC are available for registration, meaning you still have time to bring your friends and family along for the ride. 

As for inspiration, did anyone notice that Alex Honnold – the first to free climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park – recently scaled the Taipei 101 without ropes??  To each his own.      

On that note (pun intended), we would like to transition by saying that the genre of performing arts is truly a gift, especially in an age when so many of us are glued to the screen.  While there are certainly a array of impressive options to experience the performing arts in Southern California, we would like to spotlight three noteworthy venues outside of Anaheim, due to the quality and accessibility of their locations, as well as their family friendly offerings:

Around a 40-75 minute drive from the Alamo Inn and Suites depending on traffic, the Walt Disney Concert Hall is the furthest on this list, but a true immersive delight for the entire family.  Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, this state-of-the-art facility is a sight to behold inside and out, and the concert hall is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, deemed one of the best orchestras in the United States.  Still, with all the prestige in the world, the Walt Disney Concert Hall stays warm and inviting to our littles.  This venue consistently puts on Symphonies for Youth events, inviting children and families for art activities before a 45-minute concert tailored for children ages 5-11.  Even if you aren’t able to find a show you like, it is a worthy stop if you have space for our Los Angeles photo tour.    

Situated in Orange County, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, is just a 20-40 minute drive from the Alamo Inn and Suites (depending on traffic), and home to the highly acclaimed Pacific Symphony.  In addition to orchestral performances, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts showcases a larger spectrum of events which include dance, and Broadway shows.  While many performances may not be suitable for younger audiences, shows such as “The Nutcracker for Kids” and “Peter and the Wolf” are part of their Family Musical Mornings series, designed for ages 5 and up.  Before or after the show, it’s simply a 12-minute walk to South Coast Plaza for great food and shopping. 

Finally, even closer is the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, about a 20 minute drive from the Alamo Inn and Suites.  This smaller venue isn’t in the same category as the Walt Disney Concert Hall or the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in terms of architecture or acclaim, but we find it to be a great option for those preferring something more lowkey.  The La Mirada Theatre puts on widely enjoyed plays and musicals, garnishing great feedback from the local community.  As with the others, the La Mirada Theatre offers performances for younger audiences between ages 5-11 such as "Swan Lake, Jr.", part of their Programs for Young Audiences Series.

Conveniently located in the Anaheim Packing District, Mini Monster was one of the first boba tea shops that we can remember in Anaheim.  The take home glass jars were always hard to miss and sure to remind diners of their boba craving.  They certainly win for creativity + nuttiness by offering drinks such as a Thai tea boba topped with cotton candy.  Compared to the other tea shops on our list, we would say that Mini Monster is the most family-friendly option, as it is situated in a popular food court with plenty of seating and space. 

Teascape Coffee & Tea Bar is only a 10 minute drive west from the Alamo Inn and Suites, but its location does feel a bit off the beaten path.  While the tea shop itself is cute enough and the staff were kind, the surroundings might not feel the most hospitable, especially if you’ve been immersed in the world’s best theme parks.  If you don’t mind or you’re already passing by anyway, consider grabbing a drink before heading back to the resort district.  The sea salt coffee is a decadent Vietnamese style coffee for those looking for a beautiful ice-cold combo of caffeine + creamy sweetness, and the lychee watermelon fruit tea is refreshing and not too sweet, perfect for hot days.   

For something traditional, we recommend Wushiland, which opened their Anaheim location just this year.  Wushiland first opened in 1994 in Taiwan, the birthplace of boba, and eventually brought their beloved flavors to San Diego in 2016, steadily expanding afterwards.  Almost a decade later, this island staple is now easily accessible to Anaheim visitors, which is incredible.  The menu has grown over the years, but if you want a taste of Taiwan, you can’t go wrong with the roasted oolong milk tea with pearls (mini boba).  Just be ready to answer questions about your preferred ice and sweetness levels!   

Finally, we can not tell you how excited we are that the owners of Bopomofo Cafe are installing a new café concept – Bopo Go! – in Downtown Disney®, a 15-minute walk from the Alamo Inn and Suites.  Rooted in the Asian American experience, Bopomofo offers high quality boba milk teas/drinks and mouth-watering food items, such as their Taiwanese chicken sandwich or mapo tots.  We aren’t expecting anything less from Bopo Go!. 

Sequoia National Park, about 230 miles (4-5 hour drive) from the Alamo Inn and Suites, is home to the General Sherman Tree, the world’s largest tree by volume.  The main trail to this giant sequoia is accessed at the parking lot located off Wolverton Road.  Visitors with disability parking placards can stop off at a smaller lot nearby to start at a wheelchair-accessible trail.  On the way to the largest tree, other massive sequoias tower over the landscape, simultaneously taking your breath away even as they gift us with fresh air.  Most that find themselves at the foot of General Sherman will find the tree to be truly awe-inspiring and worthy of admiration.  There is a line to take pictures, so it helps to get there early.    

While the General Sherman Tree may be the main draw, there is plenty to explore at Sequoia National Park.  Easier scenic hikes for the family might include the Big Tree Trail, which circles around a meadow, or the Beetle Rock Trail, offering gorgeous views – both start near the Giant Forest Museum.  A little further in from the Giant Forest Museum, ambitious visitors can count 350 steps to ascend to the top of Moro Rock.  If you are afraid of heights, do your research to gauge your comfort levels, as there are steep drop-offs throughout the ascent.  When you’ve tired of walking, take a breather in the car and drive through Tunnel Log.    

If you’ve made it to Sequoia, you might as well venture over to Kings Canyon as these are essentially a “two for one” due to their proximity.  In fact, the ticket you purchase at one entrance gives you admission to both national parks.  The second largest tree in the world, the General Grant Tree – also designated as our National Christmas Tree – resides in Kings Canyon National Park.  While Sequoia is more accessible, Kings Canyon might generate higher interest for avid trekkers. 

For those beginning to wonder where the world’s tallest tree is located, a coast redwood tree named Hyperion stands 380 ft tall in Redwood National Park, also in California.                              

Located ~20 miles from the Alamo Inn and Suites, Balboa Island might be that little moment waiting to happen.  This man-made island can be accessed by the Balboa Island Ferry, which has been operating since 1919.  Currently, the ferries happily transport vehicles and passengers Monday through Sunday, 6:30AM to 12AM, every day of the year, but be sure to review their website for any updates.  The last time we checked, it was cash only, so bring a tad just in case.  If you have little ones, imagine their gleeful faces as you drive onto the ferry and let it whisk car and riders across water.    

Plenty of charming shops and eateries await on the other side, and it might feel as if time has stopped when you decide to venture further.  The Balboa Island Museum offers free admission for an interesting glimpse into the past of this quaint location.  If you find a good place to park, the stress should begin to melt away as you ramble along the seawall path that wraps around the island, taking in the fresh air and scenic surroundings.  At some point, swing by Sugar ‘N Spice and Dad’s to make your call on which is truly the “original frozen banana.”  And if for some reason bananas are not your thing, both shops offer Balboa Bars as a decadent alternative fit for summer.    

On the way home, you could take the ferry again.  OR you could simply drive right back to the mainland by bridge along Marine Avenue.  Whichever way you do it, have a wonderful summer!

Disneyland® - While the park across the way has nightly fireworks weather-permitting, there will be a unique display set to a patriotic soundtrack for July 4^th

Knott’s Berry Farm – In neighboring city Buena Park, one of America’s oldest theme parks will host its own fireworks celebration.

Anaheim 4^th of July Celebration 2025 – Early risers may want to look into the Anaheim 5K/10K Firecracker run in the Anaheim Hills community, which will be followed by a parade in the afternoon and fireworks at night.  The starting point for the run is a ~25 minute drive from the Alamo Inn and Suites.

Fullerton’s 4^th of July Celebration 2025 – Stop by between 9AM to noon for a car show or arrive later for music and fireworks.  Fullerton is about 20 minutes north of the Alamo Inn and Suites by car.

In case you are considering buying your own fireworks, note that “Safe and Sane” fireworks are permitted in certain cities only with clear restrictions so figure out these details before making your purchase.  No fireworks are permitted in our parking lot!

Finally, for those of you who want to enjoy the fireworks but don’t want like to pack shoulder to shoulder with strangers, we have found that simply taking a drive along the 91 freeway towards Buena Park and back to Anaheim feels like Mario Karting IRL, as fireworks blast up from local communities on both sides of the freeway.  

Most importantly, stay patient and be safe this weekend.

If you’re a fellow caffeine lover like me, get started at Nook Coffee Bar for a handcrafted cold brew or matcha.  I recently discovered matcha and can’t get enough of it.  Recently, I ordered myself a strawberry matcha, and it did not disappoint!  What I appreciate about this coffee shop is that their matcha is ceremonial grade – apparently the highest quality of matcha.  While sipping your beverage, take a look at some of the shops around, like Buffalo Exchange, a trendy secondhand store where you could go treasure-hunting.  Or swing by Creme Tangerine, which offers vinyl records inside an Airstream trailer.  If you’re vegan or interested in plant-based food, Seabirds Kitchen is a great option with a seasonal menu.  And for those who enjoy casual bars, Ruin Bar is a speakeasy with a vintage aesthetic and great cocktails.  It’s hard to miss their iconic CD tunnel and the colorful barrel fountain.

The LAB offers free parking but can fill up quickly, so consider arriving early.  If you enjoy The LAB and need a little more to extend your outing, swing over to The CAMP – The LAB’s eco-conscious sister property – right across the street.  The CAMP has a similar atmosphere with even more shops and eateries.  Finally, if the anti-mall is a little too funky for you, or you’re just wanting to browse a few name-brands, South Coast Plaza – the largest shopping mall in all of California – is a 5 minute drive from The LAB.  Who says we can’t have it all?

From the Pacific Ocean to the Sierra Nevada mountain range, there is a lot more to California than what initially comes to mind.  In fact, California possesses both the highest elevation (Mount Whitney) and lowest elevation (Death Valley) in the continental United States.  From Anaheim, a city further inland with major urban attractions, one can easily make a beeline toward one of the coastal cities to enjoy the sun and sand.  One could also drive the other way and encounter a very different type of sun and sand.  In this article, we will be veering off in the latter direction. 

From the Alamo Inn and Suites, it will take about 2-3 hours to drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and if this doesn’t ring a bell, we’d like to share why this desert might be worth exploring.  One of nine national parks in California, Joshua Tree lies primarily in the high Mojave Desert, but also transitions to the low Colorado Desert to its east, encompassing diverse ecosystems allowing for a unique range of plants and wildlife.  The Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) that the park is named after is endemic to the Mojave Desert and dot the landscape.  Among these distinctive trees, bare rock formations are scattered throughout, coalescing into an otherworldly sight that is especially beautiful to behold during the golden hour. 

During the day, the park becomes nature’s playground as visitors young and old tackle various trails and scramble up boulders.  Friendly guides at the Joshua Tree Visitor Center are available to provide recommendations for age-appropriate activities and safety tips.  Placards displaying “Do Not Die Today” are quirky grim reminders that the desert – similar to the ocean? – should be enjoyed and respected.  We found that it was critical to arrive prepared with plenty of hydration, sun protection, and long pants for bouldering.  Generally, the best times to explore Joshua Tree would be in the Spring and Fall to avoid extreme temperatures, but you will need to do your own research. 

Nighttime is when the stars come out to play.  Designated as an International Dark Sky Park, Joshua Tree serves as a venue for visitors who want to view the Milky Way with the naked eye on clear nights.  Depending on the season, shootings stars are also not an uncommon sight in the desert.  Just be ready with that wish.

Tacos Los Cholos is a relaxed spot with four locations in Orange County, the closest being in Anaheim, about a 15 drive from the Alamo Inn and Suites (This specific location is also just a few minutes away from Tierra Mia, one of our favorite coffee shops in Anaheim).  The other locations are in Fullerton and Huntington Beach, with a 4^th expected to open in Downtown Santa Ana soon.  I’ve personally only visited the Anaheim location, but if you decide to enjoy a day out in Surf City, you could easily walk to the nearby Tacos Los Cholos if you’re craving delicious Mexican food.  Tacos Los Cholos is known for its mouth-watering meat cooked over mesquite charcoal, and premium and prime meat selections.  My go to order would be the asada tacos or the mulita with asada, which is stuffed grilled tortillas with cheese and meat.  As a big fan of toppings on my tacos, I greatly appreciate that they have a wide variety of salsa from mild to spicy, as well as other garnishes.  To be sure, Tacos Los Cholos is a local favorite, so keep in mind that you will likely be waiting in line especially in the evenings and on the weekends.

If you are researching more upscale options, check out Puesto, located next to the Anaheim Convention Center.  Offering an aesthetically pleasing and modern atmosphere, Puesto is a beautiful sit-down for a fun night out or a special occasion.  At Puesto, I like to order the carnitas tacos, which are wrapped with homemade corn tortillas, as well as the refreshing aguas frescas, made in-house daily – my favorite is the watermelon.  The great thing about this eatery is that if you’re staying with us, it’s literally a 6 minute walk back to the Alamo Inn and Suites – so take all the time you need to enjoy the moment!

For brunchy options, look up Anepalco and Country Family Cafe – both are easily overlooked in different ways, but certainly worth considering.  A 5 minute drive from the Alamo Inn and Suites, Country Family Cafe is a lowkey diner that honestly doesn’t look like much from the outside.  However, if you make it past the initial impression, you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by their warm service and the best chile verde in Anaheim.  Attached to the ALO Hotel about a 10 minute drive from the Alamo Inn and Suites, Anepalco can be tricky to locate.  Offering a creative fusion of French-Mexican cuisine, Anepalco is a great find if you want a nicer setting to spend quality time with loved ones.  The chilaquiles here are to die for, and once you’re done, you’ll be just a few minutes away from The Outlets at Orange, a nice space to walk off your meal and get in some shopping. 

Today, the Packing House along with the MAKE Building, the Packard Building, and Farmers Park are four historic landmarks that are collectively known as the Anaheim Packing District.  Merchants within this venue have come and gone, but several of the originals have proven to be long-term standouts.  The Kroft has always hit the spot with a slew of poutines, mouth-watering sandwiches, and hand selected draught beers.  Popbar offers truly handcrafted gelato on a stick, with customizations galore.  And the Blind Rabbit provides a speakeasy getaway for those who are lucky enough to find it.  Meanwhile, new businesses continue to bring fresh flavors to Anaheim; at the start of 2025, LA’s iconic Randy’s Donuts introduced their donut lineup to the Packing House. 

On my most recent outing, I was on the hunt for 206 BCE California, partly for the food, and also for their bright lantern arch, which I thought would be great for pictures.  I ordered their famous Anti Gravity Noodles with sausage, and I must say that not only were the noodles delicious, but the presentation was mesmerizing, with the noodles seemingly to float magically midair!  Besides the meal items, I discovered a selection of Asian snacks and drinks that seemed fun to pair.  For dessert, I headed to Popbar, where I picked up a strawberry pop with my favorite toppings, a perfect way to end the night.

For those staying with us at the Alamo Inn and Suites, the Anaheim Packing District is only a 10-12 minute drive northward.  But before making your way over, keep in mind that the parking lot is very limited, so be prepared to look for street parking or pay for valet, which is currently $8.  If you prefer to avoid dealing with parking, or if you are planning to drink the night away, consider taking an Uber or Taxi.  As expected, weekdays are usually less busy, although depending on the day, there might be live music and other ongoing events such as The Makers Hive Market.  However you decide to get there, the Packing District is a must-visit stop in OC whether you're craving a quick bite or needing a full night out.

Getting out to the ball game may be a tradition for many American families, but even if you didn’t grow up playing or watching baseball, we recommend going to a game at least once, especially in this gorgeous California spring weather.  From the Alamo Inn and Suites, Angel Stadium is just a 10 minute drive away, and if you’re already in the area for Disneyland® or an event at the Anaheim Convention Center, this would be an easy opportunity to immerse yourself in the local sports scene.  Baseball games are usually a fun way to spend time with co-workers and families and there should be a variety of stadium concessions to satisfy everyone’s cravings.  When the sun begins to set, and 11 time All-star Mike Trout, one of the game’s greatest this decade, smacks the horsehide out of the park under those bright lights, just get ready to ROAR with the hometown crowd (If you have little ones, it’s always a good idea to bring their earmuffs, because it will be loud) – this will be a piece of Anaheim sporting history you will not want to miss!

The drive may not be terrible, especially if you plan to explore other locations south of Orange County, but we’ve found the Metrolink to be one neat alternative to explore California history – little ones usually enjoy hoping aboard the train and the adults get a breather from traffic.  The Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) would be the main stop for the Anaheim Resort District, and this Metrolink station is a quick 10-15 minute drive east from the Alamo Inn and Suites.  If that got your attention, look up the Orange County Line and see what possibilities unfold for you – a few clicks on the Metrolink schedules should show that a ride between Anaheim and San Juan Capistrano takes about 40 minutes.  Be sure to note that there are only a few departure times between the 2 stops each day and weekday/weekend routes may differ.  To stay on the safe side, plan to arrive early to find parking, purchase tickets, and figure out where to board as it will be several hours before the next train.

Another world awaits once you step off at San Juan Capistrano.  A 5 minute walk from the Metrolink stop, Mission San Juan Capistrano offers a historical experience infused with Native American, Spanish, Mexican, European and American heritage.  Not to be outdone, the Los Rios Historic District – apparently the oldest neighborhood in California – lies on the other side of the train tracks.  The Ramos House Café is a cute spot for brunch in this notable region and offers good service in a rustic-cozy patio setting, covered with beautiful plants.  Grab a southern fried chicken salad and watch the trains whiz by to slow down your clock.  When the little ones begin to holler, the River Street Ranch is the ace up your sleeve – the styling guinea pigs should be able to bring back those smiles!  If you have time to spare before your return train, there’s more to take in at the River Street Marketplace, an entirely new development juxtaposing modernity with a bygone era.      

Local Tidbit:  If you’ve had a positive Metrolink experience, consider exploring San Clemente Pier.  The Orange County Line only stops here on the weekends, providing much needed sanctuary from the daily grind.  Line up for a magical cup of caffeine at Bear Coast Coffee and take in the ocean breeze at the meandering beach across the tracks.      

From authentic Korean BBQ to trendy eateries, one of the biggest draws of The Source is its large selection of restaurants.  There were endless joints to choose from, but I went with a spicy Potato Korean hot dog from Myungrang Hot Dog.  It was my first time trying a Korean hot dog and I was satisfied with my selection.  On my next visit, I’m already planning to stop by Yoshiharu Ramen, which offers authentic Japanese ramen, then follow-up with Overflo or Sweet Box for desserts and sweets.  For those looking to sit indoors with a larger group, Food Source provides a food court type setting with flexible seating arrangements and a variety of Korean food vendors serving up homey staples such as Tofu Soup, Jajangmyeon, Korean Fried Chicken, Katsu Curry, etc.  With so many delicious dining options, you’ll want to bring your appetite!

Beyond dining, The Source boasts entertainment options such an indoor children’s playground, a karaoke lounge, sports bars, as well as CGA Cinemas, which features domestic blockbusters as well as Asian films with subtitles.  As I wandered through the outdoor mall, passing by many clothing and make-up boutiques, I discovered Life 4 Cuts, a hip Korean-style photo studio with booths offering props and backgrounds to generate personalized snapshots.  To view a digital copy, you simply need to scan the QR code on the printed photo – this is such a great activity for those who love capturing fun memories!  Whether you are a food lover, ready for a shopping spree, or simply looking for a central entertainment spot, The Source has something for everyone.

But when the fires broke out in Los Angeles, our hearts dropped. 

Among our team, we have those that grew up in LA and have deep connections to the most populous county in the United States.  Some of our team members have taken in friends and family who needed to evacuate.  We can only listen to their stories and do our best to be present with our neighbors, even as our daily responsibilities continue in Orange County.

When we hear about people helping their neighbors and pooling resources for the community, it points us to the heart of hospitality, and we need more of it.  So much needs to come together – the residents, the vendors/businesses, the local officials – to rebuild vibrant communities.

An annual tradition that my family celebrates is Las Posadas, which is observed primarily in Mexico and other Latin American countries, as well as in Hispanic communities across the United States.  Las Posadas, which means “the inns” takes place from December 16^th  to December 24^th, and commemorates the story of Mary and Joseph as they seek refuge before the birth of Jesus.  Families reenact the journey by walking through the streets in a procession, asking for shelter at selected homes, often holding candles and singing Christmas carols.  At the end of the procession, the “innkeepers” open their doors to welcome travelers in, inviting their guests to enjoy traditional food and drink like tamales, ponche, and buñuelos.  For us, Los Posadas is a religious festival emphasizing beautiful themes of hospitality and generosity.   

In addition to my familial traditions, I look forward to taking in the lights and decorations around town.  Across the way from the Alamo Inn and Suites in Anaheim, the Disneyland® parks will be bustling with winter festivities, and Knott’s Merry Farm is happening in neighboring city Buena Park.  Beyond the amusement parks, a fun place to visit is Irvine Spectrum Center – the giant Christmas tree is a must-see, there is plenty of shopping, and you can even go ice-skating at the rink.  If you are willing to spend a little more, you can also check out Winter Fest OC in Costa Mesa, where there will be ice tubing, carnival rides and games, and Santa Claus for a polaroid moment. 

For those visiting from regions with more seasonality, it may be a bit strange to experience a winter without snow, but fear not.  Although SoCal may not be known as an alpine destination, we have our spots.  Operating three distinct venues between Running Springs and Big Bear Lake – about 1.5-2 hours drive from Anaheim – Big Bear Mountain Resort offers opportunities for snowboarding, skiing, and various snow play activities for all ages and skill levels.  The climate may change drastically in the winter months, so as a rule of thumb, be sure to confirm road conditions/requirements and resort hours before you head up the mountains.

Everything costs $$$ these days, and when our friends come to town, we try to keep it simple and affordable.  Certainly, we might hit one or two of the above spots to check it off the bucket list, but we will frequently opt for a route which takes us through some LA history, providing dynamic visuals for iconic snapshots, while still being kind on our wallets.  The following is one iteration of our Los Angeles photo tour (assuming you have access to a car, as travel times may be impacted significantly if attempting public transportation):  

Preparation is key.  While we will do our best to point out a few budget-friendly locations, keep in mind that you will need to park and re-park in Los Angeles, which will cost some money and time.  Do your own research, be patient, and diligently read all the signs to avoid getting dinged.  If this is your first time visiting Los Angeles, the traffic will make a lasting impression on you, so be patient on the freeways and go with the flow.  It’s part of the adventure.   

First stop – The Broad Art Museum.  Featuring pieces by the likes of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, it is a wonder that general admission is free.  If possible, try to reserve tickets online in advance, but it appears that same day reservations or walk-ins are more available than they used to be.  If you are starting out from the Alamo Inn and Suites, getting to this contemporary landmark is likely a 45-75 minute drive, depending on the day and time.  The doors don’t usually open until 10/11AM, so plan accordingly and find a brunch spot if you’re an early bird.  As if The Broad wasn’t enough, point your lens across the way to capture another architectural icon – the Walt Disney Concert Hall. 

Second stop – Grand Central Market.  After nourishing your mind at The Broad, you will need to fill your tummy with good eats and drinks.  At this point, you may or may not want to repark.  Although it shows as 10 minutes on foot from the first stop, do the research and check your surroundings before making your decision.  When you approach the market, you will feel the hustle and bustle, so get ready for the crowd.  We will leave it between you and Google/Yelp to hash out your food preference for the day, but it would be remiss for us not to highlight G&B coffee for your midday caffeine boost.  Likewise, McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams from Santa Barbara and The Donut Man are part of the Californian experience if you’re craving something sweet.  When the tank is full, wander into the Bradbury Building – a historical and magical landmark featured in multiple films, free to enter – across the street from the market.  On the opposite side of the market is Angel’s Flight® Railway; a round-trip on this “essential Los Angeles experience” will cost you.. $2, no typo.

Bonus stop – You may very well be done for the day.  BUT, in case you still have time and energy or need a few more memories to bring home, we like recommending Little Tokyo / Arts District, one of the more walkable historic neighborhoods in Los Angeles.  This section of town is a 5-10 minute drive from the Grand Central Market and is a little more sprawled out, so you should be able to find parking at some point.  Depending on where you’re able to touch down, you will likely be greeted by an array of street art, shops, and eateries – this is the place to find authentic ramen or sushi, but there are plenty of other options as well to fit any budget.  Let your artistic intuition guide you the rest of the way, as there is no central spot here that is a must see per se.  However, if you want to get a clear shot at the new Shohei Ohtani mural, be sure to head towards the Miyako Hotel at 328 First Street before the sun dips down.

SteelCraft, an open-air eatery built from repurposed shipping containers, offers a unique and bright atmosphere for visitors.  As with other food court type experiences, there is a variety of local food and beverage vendors that operate in an eclectic and artsy dining space.  Food and drinks here include anything from Italian fusion, Mexican fusion, to boba milk tea and craft beer. 

My co-worker and I decided to swing by one day and see what SteelCraft was all about. We wanted to sample a bit of everything, so we ordered Asada Tacos, a flat bread jalapeno pizza, Lumpia, and wings with fries.  Our favorite item was the Mango Habanero wings with fries and the Lumpia.  It was my first time trying Lumpia, and I really enjoyed it!  We were so full from all the food, that unfortunately, we didn’t have room that evening to enjoy any of the desserts – but for next time, we know there will be churros, esquites and ice cream awaiting our return.

On the weekends, SteelCraft hosts live music, featuring local performers and musicians, bringing a little fun to the neighborhood.  There are also various events that are held throughout the year like karaoke nights or other pop-up events.  If any of these extras sound good to you, just be sure to check their social media or website to confirm specific event details, as schedules will vary.  For those with younger ones, there is play area as well as a vintage arcade room, putting a cherry on top for families. 

For many of us, the end of October simultaneously leads to a familial tradition that is easily confused with Halloween due to similar themes but is in fact a distinctive cultural holiday.  With around 40% of the population in California identifying as Hispanic/Latino, the majority of which are of Mexican heritage (nearly 50% of Anaheim has Mexican roots), the symbols of Dia de los Muertos are as permeating to us as the rites of Halloween.  For our visitors, all of it may seem to blend together – the costumes, skeletons and skulls, celebrations – and there is the reality of cultural fusion in such a diverse space. 

As those who live and breathe hospitality, we’ve discovered that travel offers us the privilege of gaining new experiences and learning about different cultures.  While we are in no way experts on this topic, we’d like to draw upon our own histories to offer a starting point in differentiating between Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.  Here are some basics: 

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is a Mexican Holiday - a unique blend of indigenous beliefs and Catholic traditions - celebrated from October 31st to November 2^nd, to remember and honor loved ones who have passed away.  The belief is that during these days, the souls of the deceased return to visit their families.  Key elements of the holiday, such as ofrendas, flowers, and skulls, have been prominently featured in Disney’s® animated film Coco.

What you'll see

• Ofrendas (Altars): Families set up ofrendas at home or at the cemetery, decorated with pictures of the person who has passed away, their favorite food, flowers, and candles.
• Calaveras (Skulls): Decorative skulls, especially sugar skulls are a common symbol during this period, which are fun and not scary!
• Pan de Muerto:  A special bread made for the holiday, often sweet and decorated to look like bones.
• Cempasuchil Flowers: Marigolds are used because of their bright colors and their smell is thought to help guide the spirits.

Although the element of death carries different connotations in varying cultures, for us, Dia de los Muertos is a time of celebration rather than sorrow, focusing on the joy of life and reminiscing on the wonderful memories.  Even as the process of writing this has been a learning opportunity among our own team at the Alamo Inn and Suites, we hope our thoughts might help you more fully appreciate the surrounding festivities as you explore Southern California.

We have two favorites.  A little further out, but still centrally located to Anaheim is Tierra Mia, a coffee shop serving drinks and pastries highlighting Latin American flavors.  For those driving in and out of Anaheim, Tierra Mia might be that great idea as it has a drive thru that could save time on unloading.  Just a tad north of Center Street in Anaheim, Thank You Coffee is a gem of a coffee shop about a 10-15 minute drive from the Alamo Inn and Suites.  Like Tierra Mia, Thank You Coffee showcases a creative distinctiveness, in this case, serving drinks and eats with an Asian influence.  The baristas at Thank You Coffee stand out to us for their trade skill and down-to-earth friendliness.  Both Tierra Mia and Thank You Coffee have nice interior spaces that encourage connecting and creating.  With what they bring to the table - quality coffee, welcoming setup, and originality - these two are keepers in Anaheim.  Honorable mentions: If you have the means to splurge, there’s higher-end Lamille Coffee sandwiched between the Honda Center and Angel Stadium, about a 10-15 minute drive east of the Alamo Inn and Suites.  The more budget-friendly but still quality Bodhi Leaf Coffee Traders is an extra 5 minutes eastward.  

If these don’t do it for you and you are willing to make a trek to get your fix, coffee aficionados consistently rave about Hopper and Burr in Santa Ana and there’s also a Philz Coffee location in Fullerton.  The list only increases as you widen the radius. 

My favorite beach in Orange County – for many reasons – is Huntington Beach, often called “Surf City.”  This particular drive from the Alamo Inn and Suites in Anaheim is about 35 minutes depending on traffic.  Huntington Beach has a large sandy shoreline that is ideal for relaxing, taking long walks, or simply enjoying the views of the Pacific Ocean.  There are plenty of outdoor activities and oceanfront restaurants to choose from.  I really enjoy renting a bike nearby and riding along the sidewalks; it’s a fun activity to do with your friends and family.  After biking, you can saunter down the pier to enjoy the breeze or head over to Main Street, which is lined with restaurants, bars, and retail stores.  Huntington Beach is a world-famous surfing destination, and watching the surfers in action is always thrilling.  I can’t forget the sunset.  The vibrant hues of orange, pink and purple over the water are breathtaking, especially when you enjoy from the pier or right on the sand.  Surf City is a perfect spot to escape, relax and enjoy Orange County.

We could have easily spent 5-10 more days wandering back down the coast, exploring every nook and cranny between the Northwest and SoCal.. alas, most of us have to watch our wallets!  And yes, the kids needed to get back-to-school.  Personally, I would love an opportunity to explore Oregon to the fullest, hopefully sooner than later.

1. Planning your visit

• Buy tickets in advance: Purchase Disneyland® tickets online to save time and possibly money.  Be on the lookout for deals and specials.  There is a great offer running currently for Anaheim residents!
• Confirm park hours and events: Review the Disneyland® calendar for park hours, parades, and special events to get the most out of your visit.

2. Getting to the main gates

• Public Transportation: The Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART) is a convenient and affordable option for getting to the Parks. Check out our previous blog post for more details.
• Park for free and walk through Downtown Disney: If you don’t mind walking, leave your car at the Alamo Inn and Suites and walk through Downtown Disney to get to the main gates.  In general, our guests share that this saves them money (parking costs) AND time (quicker than parking at the lots and taking the trams). 

3. Maximize your time

• Use Disney Genie+: Consider purchasing Disney Genie+ for access to Lightning Lanes, allowing you to skip the line on select attractions.
• Mobile food ordering: Use the Disneyland app to order food in advance to avoid long lines.

4. Identify costs you can control

• Book with us directly: Reserve your preferred room on our website to discover best rates for multiple night stays
• Discount at our local Denny’s: Use our room keys not only to access your guest room but also to unlock a 15% dine-in discount at our local Denny’s.  One coupon, per table, per visit. 
• Bring snacks:  Disneyland® allows you to bring your own snacks, which can be a great low-cost option.  Please be sure to review exact requirements on what can or cannot be taken into the parks.
• Shop smart: If you need to fill your luggage with souvenirs for family and friends, consider buying at Downtown Disney or nearby shops outside the parks, which may offer better prices. 

5. Special Requests

• Guest Services: Do not hesitate to ask our Front Desk for special requests, such as a room with a view or early check-in/late check-out options. However, please note that special requests are not 100% guaranteed.

• (Pismo Beach) Shake off your car legs and hike the trails of Dinosaur Caves Park OR chow down on award winning clam chowder from Splash Café along the pier

• (Morro Bay) Grab a bite of fresh seafood on the boardwalk OR watch frolicking otters rolling in seaweed under the extinct Volcano that is Morro Rock

• (Harmony) Soak in the wonder of a town with a population of 18 OR cool down with a scoop of your favorite flavor from the Harmony Valley Creamery Truck

• (Cambria) Get up close and personal with a herd of Clydesdales at the almost 2,000 acres Covell Ranch OR let the winds and wildlife of the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve sweep your cares away

• (San Simeon) Spend a day exploring the famed Hearst Castle OR immerse yourself in the raw nature of the Piedras Blancas Rookery.

To be sure, many of the above items could be experienced in a short timeframe and you could get a taste of it all in 2-3 days.  These locations are that close to one another.  Our experience is that there will be one thing or many things that cause you to stay in town just a little while longer.  There is that much beauty.  For this leg of the journey, we recommend that you take time to enjoy the moment. 

Situated a few hours south of Anaheim, San Diego is a destination associated with beautiful weather, magnificent beaches, and a broad range of family-friendly attractions.  Off the top of our minds, there’s the world-famous San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, SeaWorld, LEGOLAND® California Resort (LEGOLAND® is located in Carlsbad, between Anaheim and San Diego), or even the great Little Italy, with all it’s wonderful coffee shops and Italian eateries.  Depending on personal interests, other awe-inspiring activities may include immersing oneself in the unspoiled nature of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve® or setting foot on a legendary aircraft carrier - the USS Midway.  If you need something less dramatic for your little ones, we highly recommend a visit to The New Children’s Museum in San Diego, which overflows with creativity, texture and amazingness.   

Even as the daily demands of running the Inn rarely ease, it is important that we take time out to cultivate strong partnerships with local businesses, suppliers/vendors, non-profit organizations, and even our direct competitors.  Not all of this translates into tangible benefits (though some of it does!), but the larger goal is to serve as a platform that collaborates with and builds up the local community.  This is what we care about and if you are open to supporting local, here are a few of our favorites to get you started (:

One of my favorite events is the The Fit Expo, which takes place annually at the Anaheim Convention Center.  Each year, a spectrum of companies fill the convention space, exhibiting fitness and health products and services.  For 2024, the expo will be held on August 17-18, and tickets are going for $32 plus tax per day or $55 plus tax for both days. Tickets for kids from ages 7-12 cost $10 at the door, and kids under the age of 6 are free.  With your admission ticket, you are able to watch competitions such as NPC Bodybuilding, USPA Powerlifting, Arm Wrestling, and Parkour.  The price of admission also includes free seminars, demonstrations, and celebrity autograph sessions.  If you enjoy walking the aisles, there are over 250 exhibition booths, where you can browse and purchase supplements, energy drinks, athleisure wear, gym accessories, and nicer yet, try a slew of FREE samples.  There’s always the privilege of connecting with others who share the same hobby and potential to run into your favorite fitness influencer.  Either way, The Fit Expo is a fun outing for those who enjoy working out or are simply starting their fitness journey.

Our guests frequently ask us how to get around the Anaheim Resort District so that they are able to experience all the sights and sounds that the city has to offer.  Here’s one great option:

The Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN) was established to connect visitors to local destinations - to eat, play, and shop - around the bustling city of Anaheim.  To purchase tickets, track the nearest shuttle, and schedule future rides, get started by downloading the A-Way WeGo mobile app and selecting the region of interest: the Anaheim Regional Transportation (ART service) guides you throughout the surrounding area of Anaheim, while Everyone Ventures Everywhere (EVE service) is an on-demand service that runs between John Wayne Airport – SNA and Anaheim.

The A-Way WeGo app is convenient and easy to navigate.  Simply choose the "Passes" option to purchase your passes, and only activate them when you are ready to board.  If you'd like to schedule a ride, click on the "Trip Planner" option and select your pick up and drop off locations. If you need a ride now, then go with the "On Demand" option and choose your desired destination.  While waiting for your transportation, tap “Routes” to get an idea of when the next shuttle is scheduled to arrive.  From our experience, the shuttle services generally run daily between 6:30 am to 12:30 am, but always be sure to double-check the details. 

The stops from SoCal to NorCal range from historic to majestic – Santa Barbara, Morro Bay, Big Sur, Monterey, Santa Cruz – and the only limitation to the journey is time and money (and maybe weather).  If you are starting off from the Alamo Inn and Suites in Anaheim, the city of Solvang would be a 3-to-4-hour drive depending on traffic, an easy rest stop at the beginning of an epic road trip.  While catching a breather at Solvang – the Danish Capital of America – you might take a moment to peruse the wineries, bakeries, or boutiques.  Paula’s Pancake House is always a delight if you have time for Danish pancakes and breakfast sausages.  Just don’t linger too long, as there is plenty of road ahead.

If you have time to take a walk around the block, you might just be able to find that unique antique piece or vintage clothing that would put the cherry on top of your Southern California holiday.  Then to celebrate and/or to rest your legs, you could enjoy a meal at one of the local restaurants, cafes, or eateries.  My go-to for brunch would be Snooze, an A.M Eatery or The Filling station.  Both of these spots offer great breakfast, awesome customer service and an adorable ambiance.  Simply put, Old Towne is a great place to visit, even just to enjoy a nice stroll and capture a few pictures with your family and friends.
